EME5050 post 2 thoughts

Hello all!

I have been extremely busy as many others I'm sure are. For my post though I would like to discuss one to one environments. I love teaching in a one to one environment. There are so many positives but today I am going to talk about the negatives. When teaching Elementary school just telling the students where to go and what site to use usually doesn't fly. You need to be methodical and have your materials which in this environment includes computers, web browsers, internet sites, Power Points and other media in place. On top of that you must have a way for the students to access that information. It can be extremely frustrating when a handful of students cannot access the OneNote you created. The alternative is to have a paper and pencil activity ready for these students if and when the technology fails. Isn't the point of using this technology to save time? If I spend the bulk of my energy creating amazing One Notes for my class I don't have extra time to make a separate paper lesson just in case. What are your thoughts on technology failing and how teachers can save time when it does?

Hi Mike,
I enjoyed reading your post and completely understand your frustrations. I've taught Kindergarten for the past few years and let me tell you there are many things I have to take extra time in order to teach. Especially within the beginning of the school year. Many of them don't even know how to walk in line. (lol) With all that being said what I have found helpful is patience and repetition. Start with one or two concepts you would like your students to learn when navigating and getting to where you want them to go when using technology. After practice and repetition of similar or same concepts most students get it and you'll spend less and less time on directions and eventually will save time with technology once your students fully know what their doing. Once they've mastered one or two concepts then introduce one or two new more repeating the same methods. Eventually they should be able to use technology efficiently and be able to access the sites, places, and materials you need them too. I hope this is helpful, it's worked for me including how to use a computer. (I even have to teach them how to use a mouse and that's challenging). God Bless
